I used to love writing poetry. It’s one of those things that allow you to write free form. It doesn’t have to rhyme. It doesn’t have to make sense. Eventually I was having such fun with it, I was writing ‘nonsense poetry’ and made a little recipe book of nonsense recipes. Boy that was fun. Then you have Haiku, that aren’t supposed to rhyme and often don’t readily make sense either. They usually don’t have titles? They for sure aren’t supposed to be funny! These ain’t no Limericks on a bathroom wall baby. Strict in format and steeped in tradition, Haiku poetry is an art I know very little about. I think the last time I wrote a Haiku was in grade 12 English class, but I just entered a contest on Vocal Media for a Quadra of Haiku. Since I’m a bit stunted at that type of poetry…I wrote one…and entered it. Then I lay down for a nap. My cellphone chirped with a useless notification, waking me up after ten short minutes. I lay there thinking about the rules of Haiku and in my head double checking the one I’d written as an entry. I wondered why the rules of the contest said you could write:
one haiku, or
a set of four haiku
Then I remembered my google search for ‘how to write’ them and it said that there is often a reference to a season…So it occurred to me that the ‘set of four’ was a code referring to the four seasons, like Vivaldi! I think I cracked it and quickly wrote three more. I edited my entry. This is my set of four.
My Quadra of Haiku:
Infantile delight
the joy of being nubile
Spring born colts at play.
-
As Summer sun shines
the leaves of the tree vibrate.
Our love blooms again.
-
Autumn dusk and chill
with the smell of distant smoke
make me remember.
-
Graceful snow falling
your perfume hangs in the air.
Winter moons with you.
And that’s it. Quick and painless. And to me? … Still funny!
Thanks for reading this ‘nonsense’!
